Enduring Obligation

OPERATION ENDURING OBLIGATION

Is a 26.2 Marathon that Earl Lumpkins', Jr. is embarking on

"I have been racking my brain trying to figure out what I want to call the endeavor I have embarked on. By endeavor, I don’t mean running 26 miles. It’s also a lot more than raising money, it’s also raising awareness. Specifically, it’s about honoring the soldier by doing what I can to help provide their family any kind of relief I can muster." In Earl's own words:

"Every day we witness the media reporting casualty numbers from the ongoing operations in the Middle East. I think many civilians do not understand what the soldier behind the statistic stood for, and the legacy he leaves behind. More importantly, I don't think they are able to comprehend what it was like for that soldier not only to leave home to perform his mission, but to finally accept that he is never returning and that his family will have to live life without him.

As a former service member, I feel a compelling sense of duty to raise money for this cause, but also to bring awareness and a sense of public responsibility to help the families carry on after their loss. I didn’t have a family to worry about while completing my duties. Now I am a father of two little girls. Many times in my head I have tried to visualize carrying that responsibility in to the theater of operations. I can only imagine what it would be like for me realizing what my life truly meant and what my death will mean to my children. If afforded a moment to reflect before I died, I would think about them and hope that they would be looked after.

From this thought, it has become my mission to help achieve what I can only imagine would be the dying soldier’s last wish. I can’t do it single handedly, but I certainly feel that we have a responsibility to help in return for their sacrifice. This is my contribution".
